Here are a few of the most common questions we get about our classes and voiceover in general:

I am not a spring chicken anymore, am I too old to do voiceover?
You are never too old to try something new, especially voiceover! Remember, the reality doesn't matter. In VO, it isn't what you ARE; it's what you SOUND like! Often more mature talent actually does better at getting started because they have less fear and they also realize anything worth doing is worth the investment of time and money. investing the time and money into. Getting good doesn't happen overnight for anyone.

I don't hear voices in my head, have a unique sound, or do characters, can I still do voiceover?
Character work is actually only a very small portion of VO work. Think of all the TV and radio commercials, books on tape, and other forms of voiceover that aren't characters. Also, what is a "popular" sound today may be completely different tomorrow. For instance, right now "real" is big (very gal and boy next door), real person on the street, an unpolished sound. Anyone can do that, right?!

How much money can I make doing voiceover?
Have you ever heard the saying, "don't quit your day job?" Well, voiceover would be a situation to which this statement applies. Even in LA most talent doesn't make a living strictly doing voiceover, it's just too unpredictable. However, that being said, you can make some very good money in this industry. Of course, in the beginning of your career, you may want to do a lot of work for free just to get your foot in the door.

How much does one need to invest in a 'studio'? Can't recording be done on computers/laptops now?
With the way technology is now you can have a "studio" anywhere; a closet, a spare bedroom, even in your car. This is one of the things I cover more in depth in the first class. Basically if you already have a fairly new computer, you can be up and running for a few hundred dollars. Depends on how many 'toys' you want and how high tech you are!

What kind of voice work is there in Portland?
There is a surprisingly large amount of voice work available throughout Oregon. Not only do we have the traditional commercials for TV and radio but we have many large corporations that regularly need voice work recorded for training videos, website content, and in-house use. This form of voiceover is called 'non-broadcast' and is a very large portion of the work available in the Portland market. There are also plenty of companies that use talent to record their on-hold telephone messages and calling trees. In addition there is work in the audio book industry as well as with games and other forms of voiceover. Plenty of work for everyone!

Are only actors good at voiceover?
It is a very common myth that only actors do voice work and vice versa. This is absolutely not the case. Being an actor can help, but it is not a requirement. Many people who would never dream of getting in front of a camera do just fine when put in front of a microphone, and many professional actors don't have the patience to do voice work. The only way to know for sure if you will be a success at voiceover is to give it a try. What have you got to lose?
